Grid Engineer – Distributed BESS Renewable Energy | Grid Connection | Sydney or Melbourne Our client is an international renewable energy developer with a strong and growing portfolio of distributed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Australia. As they continue to expand their presence and pipeline, they are seeking an experienced Grid Engineer to provide technical leadership across grid connection activities from early development through to commissioning. This is an excellent opportunity for a power systems specialist who enjoys autonomy, technical depth, and regular interaction with key stakeholders across the energy sector. The Opportunity As the Grid Engineer, you will be responsible for guiding distributed BESS projects through all grid‑related activities, including feasibility assessment, connection applications, modelling coordination, stakeholder engagement, and oversight of commissioning. You will work closely with development, EPC, technical consultants and network operators to ensure projects progress efficiently and meet all technical and regulatory requirements. The role offers a highly varied scope across both development and construction, with the chance to shape best‑practice approaches within a growing organisation. Key Responsibilities Development Phase
- Manage the full grid application process for distributed BESS projects.
- Build and maintain relationships with local grid network operators.
- Work alongside the Project Development Team to identify areas of current or future grid capacity.
- Conduct feasibility studies to evaluate connection options, risks and opportunities.
- Coordinate with external grid consultants on technical advisory work.
- Provide technical guidance to developers throughout the development lifecycle.
- Support technology selection and monitor OEM performance in the NEM. EPC Planning and Construction Phase
- Assist with negotiation and finalisation of grid agreements and relevant permits.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to optimise the grid connection design for efficiency and cost‑effectiveness.
- Support commissioning activities and liaise with network operators during testing.
- Act as the internal subject matter expert on distributed BESS grid connection requirements. General
- Contribute to internal knowledge development and best‑practice frameworks.
- Build industry relationships to support the identification and acquisition of new project opportunities.
- Report regularly to senior management on progress, risks, timelines, feasibility and budget considerations. About You Essential
- Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- At least five years’ experience in power systems or renewable energy grid connection.
- Strong understanding of grid connection processes and regulatory requirements.
- Experience managing or supporting the grid connection process for generation or storage projects. Desirable
- Experience working at or with a DNSP.
- Relevant postgraduate work or research in power systems. Behavioural Attributes
- Strong judgement, professionalism and discretion.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- High attention to detail and strong organisational capability.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with both internal teams and external stakeholders. What’s On Offer
