Description
- Location: 145-147 Howard Street, Epsom, VIC, 3551, Australia Contact information
- Contact Phone: Most safety roles ask you to enforce rules and count incidents. This one asks you to understand work. Deepcore Drilling is a contract drilling business operating technically and operationally demanding surface and underground mineral projects across Victoria and New South Wales. We deliver above client expectations. That is not an aspiration. It is what our crews do, in difficult ground, in difficult locations, and they take pride in it. We are also a values-driven business that has spent several years applying Human and Organisational Performance principles, Critical Risk Management, operational learning methods, and Energy Based Safety to how we manage risk. Our HSE team won the AIHS HSE Team of the Year award in 2013. Our peers reach out regularly to understand our methods, and we share openly what we do. We are still building it. We need an experienced HSE professional who wants to be part of a small team that is genuinely trying to do this well. The Setting Deepcore Drilling operates within the Mitchell Services group, an ASX-listed contract drilling business with around 800 employees across more than 25 projects. In practice that means you work with a broader, but still small, HSE team, shared frameworks, and people who have been doing this work for a long time. Leadership at Deepcore and Mitchell Services has been stable for many years. People have been willing to try new things when there is a genuine reason to. That stability is real, and it matters. Turn up to a drill site and you are welcomed. The workforce is proud of their sites and their service to the client. Most of them genuinely love drilling. That crew culture makes the HSE work easier when you approach it the right way. Client relationships vary. Some treat you as part of their team. Others see you as a contractor. Either way, the job is to be responsive and deliver a good service to clients and our own crews. Most sites are in Victoria. Early in the role, you will spend a lot of time in the field getting to know the people, sites, and operations. That is not optional. It is how the role works. The systems are largely built. Critical Risk Management, 4D Workplace Insights, operational learning processes. Your job is to support and strengthen them, not design them from scratch. What You Will Do
- Build working relationships with supervisors and drilling crews. This is the first priority.
- Support Critical Control Management performance across sites, including verification and monitoring.
- Facilitate operational learning through 4D Workplace Insights and Learning Teams.
- Support the rollout of Energy Based Safety so crews can identify energy exposure and line-of-fire risk in their day-to-day work.
- Assist with the management of Recover at Work processes for injured workers.
- Conduct investigations that look at context and contributing conditions, not fault.
- Facilitate risk assessments that explore what is actually happening on the job, not just complete a form.
- Provide visible, responsive support to client sites. Who This Role Suits You have at least five years of HSE or Operational experience in high-risk operational environments where energy exposure and physical hazards are central to the work. You have the fundamentals. You do not need a drilling background. You need to be curious enough to learn the business quickly and confident enough to operate independently from day one.
- You build trust with frontline supervisors and crews by being present and consistent, not by enforcing.
- You manage your own workload and priorities without needing direction.
- You understand that operations own risk. You are there to support them, not police them.
- When something goes wrong, your first move is to understand the context, not find who is at fault.
- You are across the detail on injured worker management, and you follow it through without being chased.
- You want to grow your knowledge of Human and Organisational Performance, Critical Risk Management, and operational learning. You do not need to arrive with all of it, but you need to want it.
- You can manage client relationships professionally, including when those relationships are transactional.
- You operate without ego. Skills and Experience
- Minimum five years of HSE experience in high-risk operational environments, preferably involving physical hazard and energy exposure management; or relevant transferable knowledge and skills
- Demonstrated ability to build credible relationships with frontline supervisors and crews, without relying on authority.
- Experience facilitating risk conversations, not just completing risk documents.
- Solid investigation experience with exposure to methods that go beyond immediate cause. ICAM familiarity is useful. The ability to think about systems and conditions matters more.
- Working knowledge of Critical Control Management.
- Experience managing Recover at Work or Return to Work processes.
- Formal qualification in Health and Safety (Diploma or above).
- Self-managing at a senior level. You know what needs doing and you do it. What the Role Offers
- A small, stable team that operates with high trust and high expectations.
- Work inside a business that has won national HSE recognition and continues to develop its practice.
- Access to professional development in HOP, Critical Risk Management, and operational learning, including connection to an active external practitioner network.
- Access to a company vehicle.
- Flexibility based on operational need. Preferred base is Bendigo, Victoria. FIFO considered for the right person. #J-18808-Ljbffr Apply on Kit Job: kitjobau.com/job/3ruyaw
