About the Role This is a key role within the company's design and estimating function. The Security Estimator & Design Engineer is responsible for translating tender packages and client briefs into fully costed, technically sound, and compliant security system designs. In this role, you will own the process from initial tender review through to submission, producing detailed scopes of works, design drawings, Bills of Materials, and design briefs that position the company to win and deliver projects profitably. As the company's project pipeline grows to encompass larger engineering and integrated systems works, this role will be central to shaping how we approach complex, multi-discipline bids and technical design packages. Key Responsibilities Tendering & Estimation
- Analyse and interpret RFQ/RFT documentation, consultant specifications, architectural drawings, and client requirements to prepare accurate and competitive tenders.
- Conduct detailed take-offs and quantity surveys from architectural, structural, electrical, and services drawings.
- Develop fully itemised Bills of Materials (BOMs) covering equipment, cabling, containment, labour, subcontractors, and associated project costs.
- Apply supplier pricing, labour rates, margins, and contingencies to produce commercially viable submissions.
- Clearly define scope inclusions, exclusions, assumptions, and clarifications within tender submissions.
- Manage tender timelines and submission requirements to ensure compliant and on-time delivery.
- Review consultant specifications and identify value-engineering opportunities or suitable alternative solutions where appropriate. Security System Design
- Design integrated electronic security systems including CCTV, access control, intruder alarms, intercoms, duress systems, and perimeter protection solutions.
- Produce concept layouts, schematic diagrams, and detailed design documentation using AutoCAD, Visio, or equivalent design software.
- Prepare design briefs and basis-of-design documentation aligned with Australian Standards and project requirements.
- Specify and size supporting infrastructure including cabling systems, containment, conduit, communications pathways, UPS systems, and power supplies.
- Ensure all designs are technically compliant, commercially practical, and constructible within project budgets and timeframes.
- Develop scalable and future-ready system designs with integration capability across IT, BMS, and life safety systems where required. Scope of Works & Technical Documentation
- Prepare detailed Scopes of Works outlining installation methodology, testing requirements, commissioning activities, and project deliverables.
- Produce technical narratives and design documentation for internal teams, consultants, and clients.
- Compile and maintain project documentation packages throughout tender and pre-construction phases.
- Assist with as-built documentation reviews and project close-out documentation where required. Supplier & Subcontractor Engagement
- Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to obtain pricing, technical information, and product recommendations.
- Build and maintain strong supplier relationships to support competitive pricing and technical support outcomes.
- Evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations for compliance, capability, pricing, and delivery.
- Source specialist subcontractor pricing where required for outsourced or specialist works.
- Negotiate commercial outcomes while maintaining compliance and quality standards. Compliance & Standards
- Ensure all designs and submissions comply with relevant Australian Standards, including AS 2201 – Intruder Alarm Systems, AS/NZS 3000 – Wiring Rules, AS/NZS 3080 – Telecommunications Installations, and AS 4806 – CCTV Systems.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory obligations under the Security Industry Act, Telecommunications Act, NCC, and relevant WHS legislation.
- Identify and communicate technical, compliance, or commercial risks during the tender process.
- Ensure all documentation aligns with internal quality assurance processes and project compliance requirements. Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Attend site inspections, pre-tender meetings, and client clarification meetings as required.
- Present technical solutions and tender submissions to clients, consultants, and project stakeholders.
- Support business development activities through technical input, solution design, and proposal development.
- Maintain clear, professional, and responsive communication throughout the tender and design lifecycle. Required Qualifications & Licences Candidates must hold, or be eligible to obtain, all licences and registrations required to perform security design and installation work within the relevant Australian state(s). - Current White Card (Construction Induction Training)
- Current Australian Driver Licence
- Ability to obtain and maintain a National Police Clearance
- Security Industry Licence (Security Equipment Installer) or the ability to obtain Desirable
- Certificate III or IV in Security Technology, Alarm Systems, Electronic Security, or equivalent trade qualification
- Certificate IV in Electronics or Telecommunications Skills & Experience Essential
- Minimum 3–5 years' experience in security estimation, system design, or technical sales within the Australian security industry
- Strong ability to interpret architectural, civil, electrical, and services drawings
- Experience preparing detailed BOMs and tender submissions for commercial or government projects
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Visio, Simpro, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong knowledge of CCTV, access control, alarm, intercom, and duress systems
- Experience with leading platforms such as Gallagher, Genetec, Milestone, Bosch, Hikvision, Inner Range, or similar enterprise systems
- Strong understanding of structured cabling, fibre, coaxial, multicore, and containment systems
- High attention to detail with strong commercial and numerical capability Desirable
- Experience across ELV, ICT, telecommunications, or electrical projects
- Exposure to platforms such as Groundplan, Jobpac, or Procore
- Understanding of IP networking fundamentals including VLANs, PoE, switching, and bandwidth calculations
- Knowledge of PSPF and ISM frameworks for government or defence projects
