UGL's utilities business undertakes essential design and construction services for critical infrastructure in the power and water sectors. Our end‑to‑end delivery ranges from transmission lines, switchyards, substations, electrical distribution through to water and wastewater treatment plants and water pipelines. Our expertise includes design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance with our Utilities Team safely leading and delivering design‑construct projects across Australia. Our project delivery extends to short and long‑term contracts through self‑performance, subcontractors or joint ventures. We span engineering design, structural, civil, electrical installation and commissioning work. Role The Estimating Manager leads and provides estimating expertise across the Utilities business to ensure a competitive winning edge on new work and to establish cost‑effective estimates that meet contractual arrangements and the client’s scope. The role is based in Sydney or Brisbane and involves managing a team of estimators across multiple states. What a day looks like
- Provide support to the group by monitoring workload and progress to ensure effective use of resources and assess resourcing needs to meet business objectives.
- Consult with operational departments to establish requirements and detail the accuracy of tender pricing.
- Attend pre‑award and post‑tender meetings with the wider Pre‑Contracts Team, responding to queries and understanding requirements; remain available for client liaison.
- Develop and implement standard estimating guidelines and tendering processes across the Utilities Business, aligning with corporate governance.
- Provide leadership, direction, supervision and inspirational management to all team members.
- Establish clear communication, solid lines of control and actively create and maintain a culture of openness, responsiveness, honesty, ethics and responsibility across the team. Qualifications
- Quantity Surveying or Engineering degree preferred.
- Minimum of 15 years’ experience in an engineering and construction environment with emphasis on HV electrical projects.
- Experience estimating from first principles in a self‑performing and contracting environment.
- Experience with estimating software; background in Expert Estimation, CCS or CATS desired.
- Strong negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to establish effective working relationships and sound communication skills. Benefits
