Aviation Operations & SMS Specialist (Brisbane City)

We are seeking an experienced Aviation Operations Specialist and Safety Management System (SMS) Specialist to join our Brisbane team and support the ongoing development of aviation operations safety management. The role leads the implementation of aviation SMS artefacts and associated competency frameworks, training, and risk‑management initiatives across BDA’s aviation operations. Location Brisbane, Australia (remote work options considered). Occasional local and interstate travel may be required. Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead periodic and event‑based aviation risk management reviews, maintain safety objectives and performance indicators, analyse trends and systemic issues, and verify the effectiveness of controls through audits, inspections, and corrective action tracking.
- Provide evidence‑based safety advice to accountable leaders on safety outcomes, compliance, and residual risk. Prepare executive summaries, risk registers, decision papers, and status reports, and engage with customers, internal stakeholders, and external forums to communicate risks, mitigations, lessons learned, and investigation outcomes.
- Help establish and sustain Aviation Operations (AVNOPS)-specific SMS training across the organisation, support safety governance forums, and contribute safety input to procurement, Statements of Work, and assurance activities.
- Support safety review boards and Just Culture reviews to ensure fair, consistent decision‑making and alignment with SMS principles and organisational safety outcomes.
- Develop, implement and continuously improve SMS documentation with a focus on AVNOPS, including policies, procedures, work instructions, checklists, and forms. Translate regulatory and operational requirements into practical, auditable tools for frontline and support staff, while managing role‑based training, competency assessment, and document change control. Required Experience
- Practical, demonstrable experience managing an SMS in an aviation or Defence environment.
- Advanced knowledge of aviation risk management strategies and frameworks.
- Experience working in high‑tempo Defence aviation operations. Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of Defence Aviation Safety Regulations and regulatory compliance.
