Application Systems Architect (Brisbane City)

We’re partnering with a global leader in mining technology to support the continued evolution of a large-scale, globally deployed platform used across mining operations worldwide. This role sits at the intersection of application architecture and software delivery — ideal for a hands-on architect who enjoys working closely with engineering teams and remaining technically involved, including occasional hands-on development. You’ll play a key role in shaping modern application architecture across a hybrid landscape leveraging AWS, Microservices, Java, and modern front-end frameworks. About the Role As an Application Architect, you’ll act as a technically credible, hands-on architecture leader — bridging design and delivery. This is not a purely conceptual or governance-focused role. You’ll work closely with engineers, influencing decisions at design, implementation, and (where needed) code level, ensuring architectural outcomes are aligned, pragmatic, and executable. Key Responsibilities Application Architecture & Technical Leadership
- Define and own scalable, maintainable, and secure application architectures
- Engage at code, framework, and platform level to guide technical decisions
- Apply strong engineering judgement to balance delivery speed vs long-term sustainability
- Influence implementation approaches, including detailed design and selected code-level decisions
- Contribute hands-on to development where required to support teams and critical delivery outcomes
- Application architecture and solution views
- Logical and physical design models
- Integration, data flow, and deployment designs
- Technology selection and trade-off documentation
- Ensure architecture artefacts are clear, practical, and directly consumable by engineering teams
- Maintain documentation as living artefacts throughout delivery Delivery Collaboration & Alignment
- Work closely with engineering teams to embed architecture into day-to-day delivery
- Guide teams through decisions across planning, build, and release phases
- Partner with product owners and delivery leads to translate business needs into executable designs
- Support resolution of technical constraints, risks, and design conflicts early
- Apply and evolve architecture standards, patterns, and reference models
- Identify opportunities to simplify, modernise, and rationalise applications
- Contribute to technical roadmaps, modernisation initiatives, and debt reduction
- Promote consistency and reuse while remaining pragmatic About You You’re a hands-on application architect or senior technical leader with strong engineering roots and a track record of delivering practical architecture in complex environments. Core Experience
- 10+ years’ experience in software engineering, application architecture, or related roles
- Solid background in application development and modern architecture patterns
- Comfortable working close to the code, across APIs, frameworks, and cloud-native platforms
- Proven ability to produce designs that directly enable successful implementation
- Experience guiding engineering teams through architectural decisions
- Willingness and ability to contribute to hands-on development when needed Technical Strengths
- Microservices and distributed systems
- Cloud and hybrid architectures (AWS or similar)
- Modern application platforms and integration patterns
- Strong understanding of engineering practices and delivery workflows
