The Role We are seeking an experienced Machinist with proven skills in large turning and milling to join our day‑shift team in Pinkenba. This is a labour‑hire role through Haynes People, with the opportunity to transition into a permanent position at HMG for the right candidate. You will machine large, heavy‑duty components to tight tolerances using well‑equipped CNC and manual machines in a precision‑focused, safety‑conscious environment. What You’ll Be Doing
- Set up and operate large lathes and milling machines (manual and CNC) to machine heavy industrial components
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings to produce precision parts
- Machine hydraulic cylinders, shafts, housings, and other large‑scale equipment for mining, construction, transport, and energy industries
- Perform precision measurements and quality checks to ensure jobs meet specifications
- Work with a range of materials including steel, alloys, and castings
- Maintain equipment, tooling, and ensure work areas remain safe, organised, and clean
- Collaborate with the workshop team to meet deadlines and deliver high‑quality outcomes
- Support continuous improvement by contributing ideas for machining efficiency and accuracy Qualifications
- Trade‑qualified machinist (Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical Trade or equivalent)
- Proven experience in large turning and milling
- Competent in reading and interpreting detailed engineering drawings
- Experience machining large, heavy components to close tolerances
- Skilled in using precision measuring equipment (micrometers, verniers, dial indicators)
- Ability to operate both CNC and manual machines confidently
- TIG and MIG welding experience highly regarded
- Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality
- Team‑oriented, reliable, and able to work independently when required
- Current driver’s licence and reliable transport
- Ability to pass a pre‑employment medical and drug & alcohol screening Perks
- Day shift, 38 hours per week with overtime opportunities
- Potential to transition to a permanent role with HMG
