- Be a part of Australia’s most trusted cancer Not-for-Profit organisation
- Provide cultural guidance and advisory support for the Quitline service, ensuring culturally safe approaches to cessation of smoking and/or vaping.
- Part-time 3 days per week (0.6 FTE), maximum-term role until June 2027.
- Hybrid working environment, primarily based in community at events, working from home, and from our East Melbourne office. About your environment Since our establishment in 1936, Cancer Council Victoria has developed an international reputation for our innovative work in cancer research, prevention and support. As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, we play a leading role in reducing the impact of all cancers on all people. The Prevention Division aims to prevent cancer for all Victorians. This is done through community interventions, mass media, advocacy, training and providing policy advice based on the best available evidence. This involves action to affect individual behaviours and the broader physical and legislative environment to reduce cancer risk. We prioritise health inequalities, especially in relation to Aboriginal people, and in culturally diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged communities. The Quitline, which includes a dedicated Aboriginal Quitline (AQL) service, is managed by Quit, the Cancer Council’s nationally recognised peak group dedicated to supporting people to become nicotine free. Quitline is a clinical telehealth service providing access to free and confidential telephone counselling plus information and advice through telephone and digital platforms. Although you’ll be largely working remotely in the community, ongoing support and engagement is provided in real time through a peer support network and supervision. About your opportunity We are seeking an Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer to join the Quit Victoria team. Reporting to the Quit Aboriginal Adviser your role is to:
- Promote awareness and understanding of AQL among Aboriginal health workers, Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program workers and community leaders.
- Support stakeholders to understand and utilise appropriate referral pathways into AQL.
- Participate in outreach activities across metropolitan, regional and rural Victoria to increase visibility and access to AQL.
- Under the advice of the Aboriginal Adviser, grow key stakeholder relationships and create mutually beneficial partnerships within the Aboriginal sector to enable Quit to deliver on its strategic objectives.
- Plan and coordinate outreach activities across Victoria, including regional and rural communities.
- Deliver a cluster approach to engagement, combining workforce engagement and community activities to maximise impact.
- Contribute to AQL communications, including newsletters, updates and resource dissemination. All about you We are looking for someone with:
- Demonstrated ability to build and strengthen relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, communities and organisations
- Relevant experience in a similar role working with or in the Victorian Aboriginal health or social support sector
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop, maintain and nurture team-oriented partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
- Experience in negotiation and problem-solving skills, specifically in working between various sectors and organisations.
- Proven experience in working independently, demonstrating initiative, accountability and influence
- Results focussed with the ability to manage a broad workload, focus on the big picture and deliver key day-to-day tasks.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, including the proven ability to meet tight deadlines What we can offer you
- Work for purpose: Contribute to our powerful mission to reduce the impact of cancer through prevention, support, and research.
- Salary: $76,411 to $82,291 base salary per annum (pro rata for part-time), commensurate with experience, plus 12% superannuation and 17.5% annual leave loading.
- Not-for-profit salary packaging benefits: Increase your take-home pay by paying certain expenses using your pre-tax salary — up to $15,900 in living expenses plus $2,650 in meals and entertainment annually.
- Generous leave: Study leave, cultural and ceremonial leave, blood donation leave, gender affirmation leave, paid parental leave, and up to 3 days of leave between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Refer to our Enterprise Agreement for more information.
- Flexible and hybrid work: A range of options to support work-life balance, including a mix of working from home and our modern office at 200 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne.
