About the Role

As a Fibre Network Designer in the Fibre Operations Team, you will be responsible for delivering high quality fibre network designs that support new services, network upgrades, ongoing capacity management and preventative maintenance and strategic projects. You will contribute to end to end route and circuit design, develop cost estimates, and ensure all work aligns with engineering standards, Safety in Design principles, and project requirements.

Reporting to the Fibre Operations Team Leader, this individual contributor role involves collaboration with internal stakeholders, contractors, and vendors to ensure designs are buildable, resilient, and delivered to the required quality and timelines. Depending on your experience, you will either receive mentorship from senior team members or provide technical guidance to colleagues and support continuous improvement across processes, data quality, and design tools.

Key responsibilities include owning or contributing to complex fibre route designs, producing design documentation, supporting build delivery, monitoring network capacity and utilisation, and driving accurate commercial decision making through high quality design outputs. Responsible for preventative maintenance on the fibre network, analysing data, auditing, and determining best solution for mitigating risk to the network.

The position operates under Vocus’s hybrid working model (two days per week in the office) and may require occasional travel to field sites. No security clearance or shift work is required.

What You’ll Be Doing


- Deliver fibre network solutions and cost estimates for connection requests, and scope changes, enabling accurate quoting and informed commercial decisions. Plan and design end to end fibre routes for new services and network changes, using internal and third party assets and build constraints to produce resilient, buildable designs.
- Monitor and manage fibre network capacity and utilisation, including and the creation of upgrade or rearrangement orders, to meet demand while protecting network performance and service availability.
- Produce and maintain design deliverables and network records—, drawings, work orders/SOW and as builts—to ensure accurate construction, smooth handover and long term traceability.
- Apply Safety in Design, engineering standards, and policy/contract requirements across all design work to reduce risk, meet regulatory obligations and maintain network integrity.
- Coordinate with and provide technical direction to internal teams, contractors and vendors during build and change delivery, resolving design queries and managing dependencies to achieve milestones on time and to quality standards.
- Provide operational design support for preventative maintenance under infrastructure lifecycle management, review temporary repairs, implement permanent repairs and restore any network issues.
- Identify, prioritise and support the implementation of process, system and technology improvements across planning and design to increase productivity, strengthen data quality and improve customer outcomes.
- Review and update of documentation to ensure adherence to current FAA’s, codes of practices agreements secured by carrier management, legal and property What You’ll Bring to the role


- 5+ years’ experience in fibre network planning, design, documentation and/or delivery, including producing design deliverables (plans, splice schedules, GIS/CAD updates);
- Bachelor’s degree preferred. Fibre Network Design Fundamentals (OSP/ISP, aerial and underground & Buildability): Proficient
- Routing Trade Off Analysis & Path Optimisation: Proficient
- GIS & CAD Tools for Network Records: Proficient
- Costing, Estimation & Commercial Acumen: Working–Proficient
- Safety in Design, Standards & Compliance: Proficient
- Stakeholder Communication, Influence & Negotiation: Proficient
- Project Planning, Prioritisation & Reporting: Proficient
- Structured Problem Solving & Incident Support: Proficient
