SCADA and Communications Technician apprenticeship These technicians play a critical role in monitoring, maintaining and troubleshooting SCADA systems and the associated communications infrastructure. These systems are essential for the automated control and real‐time monitoring of industrial processes such as water treatment plants, electrical grids, and manufacturing operations. During your 4-year apprenticeship you will achieve a UEE***** Certificate III in Electronics and Communications that will equip you with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage, maintain and secure SCADA systems and communication networks. This includes the principles of SCADA operation, hardware and software installation, network configuration, data management, cybersecurity measures, troubleshooting, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Key responsibilities System maintenance and upgrades: Regularly inspect, maintain, and update SCADA systems, performing software upgrades and replacing or repairing faulty hardware components like sensors, controllers, and communication devices. Installation and configuration: Install and configure recent SCADA equipment, ensuring proper integration with existing systems and setting up communication networks, including IP addresses, routers, and switches. Monitoring and troubleshooting: Monitor SCADA systems and networks to detect and diagnose problems, troubleshoot, resolve software, hardware, and connectivity issues, and respond to alarms to prevent or mitigate operational disruptions. Data management: Collect, analyse, and interpret SCADA data to ensure operational efficiency, maintain data integrity and accuracy, and generate reports to support decision‐making. Security management: Implement and manage cybersecurity measures, conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments, and update security protocols, firewalls, and antivirus software. Subjects to focus on Maths: Sound basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are needed for tasks such as measuring cable lengths, calculating quantities of materials needed, or determining costs. Literacy: Competent language and writing skills are needed to understand documents such as secure‐work method statements, wiring rules, standards, and drawings, and to complete documentation requirements. Pre‐apprentice qualifications If you've already finished school, completing a UEE***** Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) is a great introduction to the industry. It's a good idea to complete a CPCWHS**** to prepare to work safely in the construction industry, also known in the Northern Territory as a White Card.
