Description
The Aviation Safety Advisor role is built on the principle that aviation safety is often best achieved through education, collaboration and shared understanding of operational risk. While CASA's enforcement framework remains a core regulatory responsibility, this role is focused on influencing safety outcomes by building trust, sharing knowledge and helping industry embrace a culture of continuous improvement. Aviation Safety Advisors work alongside the aviation community to support safer operations through education, shared learning and open conversations about safety challenges in real operational contexts. Operating within CASA's AvSafety program, Aviation Safety Advisors engage directly with pilots, operators and organisations to help them understand safety issues and apply regulatory intent in practical, achievable ways. Advisors regularly work with commercial operators operating in complex or higher risk environments, including contexts where constructive regulatory relationships need to be actively built or strengthened. The role requires confidence, credibility and professional judgement to support safer operational decision making through education rather than enforcement. The role is not primarily about compliance action. It is about building safety capability within industry and supporting better safety decisions before regulatory intervention becomes necessary. Aviation Safety Advisors represent CASA in environments where credibility, empathy and professional judgement are critical. Advisors operate with a high degree of independence, adapting their approach to suit different sectors, operating environments and levels of safety maturity. Key Responsibilities Aviation Safety Advisors undertake an ongoing body of work centred on education, engagement and safety influence across the full breadth of the Australian aviation community. Responsibilities include: Establishing, managing and sustaining trusted relationships with private, recreational and commercial aviation operators, pilots and organisations, including engagement on complex or sensitive safety issues where credibility, empathy and sound judgement are required. Delivering aviation safety education and technical guidance through face to face and online engagements, translating regulatory intent, safety management principles and risk concepts into practical guidance relevant to real operational environments. Representing CASA through the AvSafety program by listening to industry, sharing operational experience and supporting positive safety behaviours aligned with CASA's safety objectives. Applying sound regulatory judgement under limited direction, including identifying when issues require escalation and contributing insight that supports CASA's understanding of emerging safety risks, behaviours and industry trends. Working with operators across diverse operational contexts, including private and general aviation as well as commercial operations, supporting safer decision making through education rather than enforcement. Contributing to the development and delivery of safety promotion activities and education resources, including support for CASA safety communications and engagement initiatives. Working collaboratively with CASA colleagues to interpret safety issues arising from engagement activities and support consistent, clear and practical safety messaging. Representing CASA with professionalism at aviation events, forums and stakeholder engagements, including undertaking regular intrastate and interstate travel. In addition to the responsibilities above, a Senior Aviation Safety Advisor is expected to operate with a higher level of autonomy, complexity and influence, including accountability for leading defined elements of the AvSafety program. Senior Aviation Safety Advisors are responsible for: Leading a defined component of the AvSafety program or engagement portfolio, including planning, coordinating and delivering activities that support CASA's safety education and engagement objectives at a national or sector specific level. Leading complex or high impact engagement activities, often involving commercial operators or operational contexts with elevated safety risk, organisational complexity or low safety maturity, requiring tailored, relationship based approaches. Exercising advanced professional judgement on complex, ambiguous or novel safety issues where prescriptive guidance may be limited, ensuring advice reflects regulatory intent, operational realities and CASA's regulatory philosophy. Providing subject matter leadership through mentoring, informal coaching and knowledge sharing, supporting capability development, confidence and consistency across the Aviation Safety Advisor team. Acting as a trusted advisor within CASA by synthesising insights from industry engagement and contributing to understanding of systemic safety issues, emerging trends and behavioural risk factors. Contributing to the design, refinement and continuous improvement of safety education strategies, engagement approaches and delivery methods within the AvSafety program. Supporting others through change by guiding adaptation to new engagement models, evolving safety priorities or program enhancements. Ideal Candidate We are seeking aviation professionals who believe that safety is strengthened through education, collaboration and shared understanding of risk. Successful Aviation Safety Advisors combine robust operational aviation knowledge with empathy, sound judgement and the ability to influence behaviour without relying on authority. They are comfortable engaging across diverse sectors of the aviation community and value trust, credibility and continuous improvement as drivers of safety outcomes. Aviation Safety Advisors are expected to demonstrate: A solid understanding of aviation operations across private, recreational and/or commercial environments, and the practical challenges faced by pilots and operators. The ability to engage constructively with industry stakeholders, including building rapport, listening actively and explaining safety and regulatory concepts in plain language. Strong communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to deliver safety education both in person and online to varied audiences. Sound professional judgement and the ability to work independently under limited direction, including recognising when safety issues require escalation. An appreciation of safety management systems, risk management, human factors and non technical skills, and an ability to relate these concepts to real operational scenarios. Emotional intelligence and adaptability, including the ability to tailor engagement approaches to different operating contexts, cultures and levels of safety maturity. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience as a pilot in commercial flight operations, ideally within the general aviation sector, with experience in leadership or management roles that require balancing safety, operational performance and commercial realities. In addition to the capabilities above, a Senior Aviation Safety Advisor is expected to demonstrate a higher level of autonomy, influence and leadership within the AvSafety program, including: The ability to lead defined components of a safety education or engagement program, including planning, coordinating and delivering activities that support CASA's safety objectives. Advanced professional judgement when operating in complex, ambiguous or sensitive safety contexts where prescriptive guidance may be limited. Experience engaging with more complex or higher risk operational environments, including situations where trust in the regulator must be actively built or strengthened. The capacity to act as a subject matter leader, providing informal coaching, mentoring and guidance to Aviation Safety Advisors to support capability development and national consistency. Strong influencing and facilitation skills, including managing differing perspectives and contributing constructively to difficult safety conversations at a senior or organisational level. The ability to synthesise insights from industry engagement and contribute to CASA's understanding of systemic safety issues, emerging trends and behavioural risk factors.
