As a Research Agronomist, you will work with an energetic team of research and extension officers in the Farming Systems Innovation team to assess new farming systems and practices on farms and help growers and agronomists to implement the best of these practices on their farms. • Provide strategic support to the Principal Research Agronomist in Emerald to build a portfolio of research, development and extension projects that supports continued innovation for productive, profitable and sustainable farming systems in line with government/departmental priorities.
• In consultation with the team leader, you will provide scientific support to develop and negotiate new projects and funding from other agencies and funding bodies that address research priorities.
• Build and maintain effective and mutually beneficial internal and external relationships and collaborative partnerships with funding bodies, industry organisations, Natural Resource Management bodies and other government agencies at a regional and state level to address productivity and environmental outcomes.
• Co-design and co-deliver innovative on-farm research programs that advances agronomic practices that have a positive impact on the future challenges faced by Queensland growers including the collection and preparation of soil, plant, and water samples.
• Ensure that appropriate processes are used so that research outcomes are understood by stakeholders and are integrated into improved management practices Use appropriate processes to effectively deliver communication and extension activities that help growers and agronomists understand research results, their implications and how to subsequently apply improved practices on their farms.
• Contribute to the research and publish key findings in scientific journals, report impacts and implications in line with industry and department needs.
• Collect, collate, evaluate and analyse project data using appropriate computer and scientific technology.
• Work as part of a team to ensure project milestones are attained in a timely manner.
• Undertake supervision and direction of support staff, as needed. Please note this role requires out of hours work, travel, weekend work and remote work to service research sites in central Queensland. Technical Requirements of the role:
• Extensive knowledge of emerging issues in for modern farming systems in central Queensland and challenges for profitability and sustainability of natural resources in the region.
• Demonstrated ability to initiate, conduct, manage, report and publish the scientific outcomes of field-based research.
• Project management skills with demonstrated ability to develop, manage, evaluate and report on the impacts of a strategic research portfolio in a complex organizational environment with multiple stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to participate effectively in multi-disciplinary RDE teams.
• Communicate effectively with staff and growers. What we are looking for: There are some qualifications that we see as essential. You must possess a:
• A Bachelor degree or higher in Agricultural Science, Applied Science or Rural Science in a field relevant to the position from a recognised tertiary institution. Queensland broadacre dryland cropping experience is highly desirable.
• A current ‘C' class drivers licence.
