Our client is a world leader in the manufacturing of advanced technical and scientific products. They employ thousands of people across R&D; and manufacturing facilities globally and are committed to developing innovations that support critical industries. They are currently seeking a Product Design Engineer for a contract role supporting the design and development of moulded and fabricated components at their facility in the North-West Sydney region. This role will support component-level design, drawing quality, development and manufacture for advanced engineered products. It sits within Product Development and will suit someone with strong 3D CAD capability, detailed design experience and confidence working through supplier feedback, prototyping, optimisation and production-ready documentation. This is a practical product design role, not a basic drafting position. The focus is moulded plastic and fabricated component design, detailed engineering drawings, BOMs, specifications, DFM/DFA, supplier interaction and iterative design refinement. Duties include:
- Designing moulded plastic and fabricated components using 3D CAD
- Producing and maintaining detailed engineering drawings, BOMs and specifications
- Applying design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly principles
- Supporting tooling, supplier and contract manufacturer interactionsWorking with suppliers to prepare, prototype, optimise and produce moulded parts
- Reviewing component fit, function, manufacturability and performance
- Investigating component issues and supporting corrective design actions
- Updating drawings and documentation based on supplier, prototype or production feedback
- Working closely with R&D;, Manufacturing Engineering, suppliers and pilot operations
- Maintaining accurate design documentation in an iterative development environment Ideally you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering or similar
- Solid 3D CAD capability
- Experience designing moulded plastic components
- Experience designing fabricated components will be highly regarded
- Experience producing production-ready engineering drawings and documentation
- Understanding of DFM, DFA, tolerancing and materials selection
- Exposure to tooling concepts and supplier/manufacturer interaction
- Experience working with moulders, toolmakers or contract manufacturers
- A detail-oriented and methodical approach to design work
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative technical team
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Vault or similar CAD/PDM systems will be highly regarded.
- This role will suit someone from a product design engineering, mechanical design engineering, product development, CAD design, engineering drafting, NPD, tooling or plastics design background who has experience designing manufactured components through to prototype, supplier feedback and production-ready documentation.
