About This Role Great opportunity to join Youth Justice on an ongoing based at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct. Play a key role in reducing occupational violence by analysing incidents, driving continuous practice improvement, and delivering hands-on coaching and support to frontline staff. Identify and develop improvements to training packages and lead the implementation and monitoring of approved initiatives in collaboration with senior leadership. The Department of Justice and Community Safety, Youth Justice Group is responsible for statutory supervision of young people in the criminal justice system in Victoria focussing on prevention, diversion, and early intervention as the most effective and fiscally responsible ways of reducing youth crime. Children and young people involved in Youth Justice are either supervised in the community, by community youth justice workers located at Justice Service Centres across seven regions in Victoria or within custodial precincts. Custodial precincts focus on providing a genuine therapeutic environment, driven by relationships based on an integrated model of care and evidence-based approach to programs and services. The three Youth Justice custodial precincts in Victoria are managed by the Department of Justice and Community Safety: Parkville Youth Justice Precinct is in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Parkville, approximately five kilometres from the central business district. Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct located to the west of Werribee. Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct located approximately 100 kilometres north of Melbourne. Working with a small team, the Assistant Manager, Operational Safety Capability and Review helps to address and mitigate risks of occupational violence in youth justice custodial facilities through analysis, ongoing practice improvement, and coaching and support to youth justice custodial staff. The Opportunity Ongoing, full-time position based at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct but working flexibly across other Youth Justice Custodial Precincts (Parkville & Cherry Creek), where needed to respond to operational requirements. VPS Grade 5 role: $116,413
- $140,849 per year plus superannuation. Collaborate with key internal stakeholders, support the appropriate recording and reporting of all use of force incidents to support transparency and ongoing service improvement and outcomes. Use specialist operational knowledge to support the effective monitoring and analysis of all incidents involving the use of force by youth justice custodial staff. Working with the Director and Senior Managers, provide feedback to youth justice staff on the use of force and operational safety more broadly, to build capability and ensure compliance with legislation, the OST package and broader youth justice operating policies and procedures. Identify opportunities for development and improvement of the OST package and drive the implementation and monitoring of opportunities approved by senior leadership. Provide authoritative strategic advice, influence and guidance to senior managers and the custodial senior leadership team on matters of use of force and operational safety, including the development of complex and high-level briefing papers that provide options for continuous improvement. To Be Successful In This Role You Will Have Demonstrated experience in operational safety, preferably in a youth justice custodial environment. Experience and high-level knowledge of the day-to-day operations and the risks to safety for staff and young people within a custodial environment. Experience and competency in assessing practice against standards and legislation You will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check, which you will need to maintain for the period of employment.
