Heavy Vehicle Mechanic (Maitland)

Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking an experienced Heavy Vehicle Mechanic (Diesel Mechanic) to join our skilled workshop team for an immediate start. This full‑time position offers day and afternoon shift options. Location: Speers Point, New South Wales. Work will be based at our well‑equipped Depot Workshop in Boolaroo NSW but may involve travel across multiple sites. Key Responsibilities
- Ensure plant and fleet servicing, repairs, modifications, RMS registration and safety inspections are completed in accordance with NSW statutory requirements, National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) standards and Council’s processes.
- Carry out automotive air conditioning service and repairs.
- Support the training, direct and supervise apprentices by demonstrating high‑quality work, safe work practices and fault diagnostics.
- Minimise unplanned maintenance of Council’s assets by reporting observed faults/defects and suggesting improvements to procedures, practices or new methods.
- Carry out risk assessments for all work performed and contribute to the development of work method statements outlining safe ways to work. Required Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical trade qualification and automotive air conditioning experience and related qualifications.
- Previously worked in a similar position servicing and repairing heavy and light vehicles, small and heavy plant equipment and machinery.
- Current HR driver’s licence.
- Current RMS unrestricted vehicle examiner’s certificate or willingness and ability to obtain one.
- Understanding of computer maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Desirable: TAFE or industry post‑trade qualifications in hydraulic systems, electronic controls, braking systems and/or welding.

- Competitive salary from $74,503 to $86,583 per annum plus 12 % superannuation.
- Market premium of up to $4,944 per annum (subject to review in September 2027).

- Commencing salary set in line with skills and experience with annual reviews available to support movement through the salary range.
- 35‑hour working week; option to work hours across 4 days per week as part of a adaptable work trial.
