About the organisation Lowitja Institute is Australia’s only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled health research institute, working to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through high impact research, knowledge exchange and leadership development. Named in honour of the late Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG, Lowitja Institute works in partnership with communities, researchers, organisations and governments to drive meaningful and lasting change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes. About the role The Executive Manager, Communications and Events provides strategic leadership across all communications, media, marketing and event functions for Lowitja Institute. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this role leads the development and delivery of integrated communications and engagement strategies that strengthen Lowitja Institute’s profile, amplify its advocacy and support the translation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research into impact. This role oversees the strategic planning, prioritisation and delivery of communications and events activities across the organisation, ensuring all internal and external communications align with Lowitja Institute’s Strategic Plan and uphold the highest standards of cultural integrity and production quality. The role provides leadership across media, marketing, stakeholder engagement, digital communications and major events, including oversight of the nationally recognised Lowitja Conference. As a senior leadership role within the organisation, the position works closely with the CEO, Board and executive leadership team to contribute to organisational strategy, governance and decision making. The role also leads and supports a multidisciplinary team, fostering a collaborative, inclusive and high performing culture that reflects Lowitja Institute’s values and commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self determination. About you You are a strategic and values driven communications leader with extensive experience leading complex communications, engagement and event functions within large and multifaceted environments. You bring exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with proven capability across strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, media, reporting and organisational leadership. You have experience in developing and implementing communication strategies across diverse stakeholder groups and bring a strong understanding of how to elevate organisational influence through impactful messaging, engagement and storytelling. The role requires confidence in leading major events and forums, building strategic partnerships and representing organisations within complex stakeholder environments. As a people leader, you are committed to fostering strong team culture, capability development and continuous improvement. Most importantly, you bring demonstrated lived experience, connection to and knowledge of the health, wellbeing and self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated lived experience, connection to and knowledge of the health, wellbeing and self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- High level capability in writing and editing reports, newsletters, annual reports and similar publications, particularly in research contexts.
- Proven ability to develop and implement complex communication strategies across multiple stakeholders, including high level reporting and engagement.
- Proven executive leadership of multidisciplinary teams, including workforce planning, performance management, capability development, succession planning and resource allocation.
- Proven experience leading the design and delivery of major events and forums, including large scale conferences and cross sector engagements.
- Proven ability to build and maintain high level strategic relationships across complex stakeholder environments. What we can offer you
