Job TitleResearch Officer/Senior Research OfficerJob DescriptionAn exciting opportunity is available for a Research Officer or Senior Research Officer to join the Hill laboratory in the Infection and Global Health Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.About the positionThe purpose of the position is to undertake research on the adaptive immune response to pathogens including Streptococcus pyogenes to inform the development of new vaccines and therapeutics. The successful candidate will develop detailed expertise in methodologies specific to isolation and interrogation of antigen-specific T and B cells, using both human tissue and animal models.The postdoctoral researcher will conduct this research project under limited supervision according to agreed work plans, either independently or as a member of a team, and lead the production of publications from that research. This position will involve laboratory research, data analysis, project management tasks, and other administrative tasks to support laboratory operations. The appointee will oversee project timelines, reporting, ethics, and governance requirements, management of confidentiality and intellectual property. They will oversee stakeholder engagement with academic and industry partners through regular, high-quality written reports and oral presentations.The successful candidate will be expected to co-supervise and/or mentor postgraduate students and other junior team members, and support other research projects in the laboratory. Methods and approaches that may be used include standard and specialised immunological assays, cell culture, flow cytometry, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, multi-parameter imaging, bioinformatics and statistical analysis.Selection CriteriaEssential knowledge and skills:A PhD in immunology, microbiology or a closely related field.Demonstrated analytical and manuscript preparation skills; including a track record of refereed research publicationsStrong project management abilities with excellent oral and written communication skillsExperience in human immunology or in cellular immune responses to infectious disease.Proficiency in multiparameter flow cytometry and panel design.At Level B, a solid track record of publications, project leadership and contributions to grant development.Desirable Knowledge and Skills:Advanced skills in statistics and data analysis of large data sets, including coding (R, Python) and bioinformatics is highly desirable but is not essential.Research expertise with CD4+ T cells, B cells and germinal centre biology.Personal Qualities:A demonstrated capacity to work in a collegiate manner with other staff in the workplaceAbility to manage time effectively and be reliable and approachableExcellent communication skills and the ability to work constructively within a team environmentExcellent attention to detail, ensuring that data, new methods and theories are accurate, of high-quality and accessible to other researchersA demonstrated interest in immunology and vaccine developmentTerms of appointmentThis position is available for a period of one year in the first instance in a full or part time capacity. Salary is Research Employee Level A ($104,071
- $111,707), or Research Employee Level B ($117,596
- $139,636), depending on experience.
