Mechanical Design Engineer

- 110k/year Location Melbourne Job Overview Our client is a long-established specialist in conveyor systems, rollers, and materials handling equipment, supporting customers across manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, and industrial environments. With continued growth and demand for engineered solutions, they’re now seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Melbourne’s north and take a lead role in delivering end-to-end conveyor projects. This is a hands-on, technical design position that blends concept development, detailed drafting, customer liaison, and project oversight—perfect for someone who thrives on autonomy, problem-solving, and bringing mechanical systems from concept to commissioning. Key Responsibilities
- Support the sales team with conceptual layouts, feasibility designs, and technical input
- Prepare drawings, models and documentation for tender submissions
- Work directly with customers to develop solutions from concept through to delivery
- Manage projects, timelines, and deliverables across multiple stakeholders
- Oversee production planning and support assembly/installation teams
- Produce detailed parts and assembly drawings using AutoCAD/Inventor
- Coordinate with suppliers regarding components, technical requirements, and lead times
- Maintain stock tracking and support procurement activities
- Compile operation and maintenance manuals for completed projects
- Conduct hazard assessments and ensure compliance with relevant safety standards
- Participate in product evaluations, design reviews, and improvement initiatives
- Assist with manufacturing and assembly procedure development
- Maintain quality control and contribute to cost-efficiency improvements About You
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical design within conveyors or materials handling
- Solid background in designing,, and commissioning end-to-end solutions
- Deep understanding of conveyor systems (roller, belt, chain, pallet, carton etc.)
- Advanced skills in AutoCAD and Inventor
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
- Strong knowledge of conveyor safety standards and ability to prepare risk assessments
- Able to manage multiple projects from concept through commissioning
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong customer relationships
