Debt Technical Officer (Insolvency) (Melbourne)

We are seeking experienced technical leaders to join our Strategic Recovery and Insolvency and Litigation and Legal Services teams. As a Debt Technical Officer, you will undertake a leadership role in providing authoritative technical advice and guidance on complex insolvency, litigation and recovery matters, working closely with business partners. These roles operate across multiple specialist streams, including Complex Insolvency, Indemnities, and Litigation and Legal Services. Specific responsibilities will vary by stream, while all roles contribute to strategic decision making on high risk, complex insolvency, litigation and recovery matters. You will lead and influence the ATO’s insolvency management and recovery strategies representing the Commissioner as a significant creditor in formal insolvency processes. This includes assessing and making recommendations on Deeds of Company Arrangement, including variations and termination, and Small Business Restructuring Plans, balancing legal, commercial, policy and public revenue considerations. You may also manage voidable transaction claims and oversee indemnity‑funded recovery work. You’ll exercise independent judgement to ensure recommendations are robust, defensible, and aligned with legislative, policy and risk frameworks. Using your significant technical expertise, you will build capability in less experienced staff through mentoring, quality assurance and technical leadership. Your resilience and professionalism will support effective engagement on sensitive and contested matters, including dispute resolution, formal mediation and court proceedings, while balancing compliance, commercial and policy considerations. This role may be offered on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis in Adelaide, Brisbane CBD, Hobart, Melbourne CBD, Parramatta or Perth.
