If you possess sound discretionary judgement and are looking for a public-facing role where you can make a visible difference in public safety, animal welfare, and local amenity, we want to hear from you. The Opportunity Reporting to the Senior Compliance Officer, you will implement and manage Council’s localised regulatory program. This diverse role balances community education with law enforcement, requiring you to resolve regulatory conflicts using a high level of common sense and clear communication. You will serve as a proactive presence across the Shire, ensuring public spaces remain safe, clean, and balanced. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting highly visible patrols and inspections across the Shire, including parking precincts, public places, companion animal matters, overgrown allotments, abandoned vehicles, and illegal dumping sites.
- Investigating complaints and customer requests, gathering evidence, keeping accurate records, and issuing notices, orders, and penalty infringement notices where required.
- Safely capturing, transporting, and managing companion animals and livestock, and assisting with the operation of Council's impounding facilities in accordance with animal welfare, biosecurity, and legislative requirements.
- Investigating environmental and public place matters, including pollution incidents, weeds, and unattended property, and taking appropriate compliance action.
- Providing clear information to residents, businesses, and stakeholders to encourage voluntary compliance and resolve issues early where possible.
- Preparing correspondence, reports, briefs, and court documentation, maintaining accurate records in Council systems, and representing Council in enforcement proceedings when required.
- Maintaining vehicles and field equipment, supporting junior staff or trainee rangers, and participating in rosters or emergency responses as required. About You You are an accountable, detail-oriented professional who can work effectively under fluctuating operational demands. You are comfortable working independently—including travelling across urban and rural sectors—while remaining committed to upholding Council’s reputation for ethical service delivery. To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:
- A Higher School Certificate or equivalent, and/or previous experience in compliance, law enforcement, local government, animal management, or a related field.
- Excellent conflict resolution, negotiation, and verbal communication skills to explain requirements clearly, manage difficult conversations, and build positive relationships.
- Sound knowledge of, or the ability to quickly interpret and apply, relevant legislation, Council policies, and enforcement procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to use technology and corporate systems, including Microsoft Office 365, mobile devices, and record management systems. Required Tickets, Licences and/or Qualifications:
- Current Class C Driver's Licence (NSW).
- Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services) or on-the-job experience within Local Government.
- Experience exercising delegated or authorised officer functions under environmental protection, pollution control, or local government legislation. Required Clearances and Checks:
- National Criminal History Check.
- Pre-employment medical screening, which may include drug and alcohol testing.
