About the role… Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Manager Governance is responsible for leading Council's governance function and providing specialist advice and support to the CEO, Mayor, Elected Members and staff. This role plays an important part in ensuring compliance with the Local Government Act, supporting informed decision making and maintaining effective governance systems, policies and statutory records. The position also oversees local government election processes, governance reporting, confidential matters, delegations, Freedom of Information processes, Public Interest Disclosure matters and Council's leases and licences portfolio. - Governance leadership
- Lead and manage Council's Governance function and support continuous improvement in governance systems and processes.
- Legislative compliance
- Develop and oversee legislative compliance frameworks, monitoring and reporting obligations.
- Governance advice
- Provide expert advice on governance, probity, confidentiality, delegations and decision making processes.
- Council and Committee support
- Coordinate governance processes supporting Council and committee meetings, resolutions and statutory requirements.
- Elected Member support
- Assist with Elected Member induction, mandatory training and governance obligations.
- Elections and reviews
- Coordinate local government election activities, supplementary elections and ward boundary reviews when required.
- Policies and Registers
- Maintain governance policies, statutory registers, delegations, bylaws and confidential items processes.
- Governance processes
- Support Freedom of Information matters, Public Interest Disclosure processes and Section 270 reviews.
- Leases and Licences
- Oversee Council's leases, licences and Community Land Register, ensuring proactive monitoring and accurate records. What they are looking for…
- Governance experience
- Experience supporting governance functions within local government, government, boards or similar environments.
- Legislative knowledge
- Ability to interpret and apply legislation, governance frameworks and formal meeting protocols.
- Communication and advice
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of reports, briefing papers and governance advice.
- Judgement and discretion
- Ability to manage confidential, sensitive and politically complex matters with diplomacy, sound judgement and professionalism.
- Relationship management
- Ability to build productive and collaborative relationships with Elected Members, staff and external and internal stakeholders.
- Initiative and delivery
- Self‑motivated, strong attention to detail and organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes within legislative timeframes.
- Qualifications
