AVE Technologies is a specialist engineering and technology company delivering integrated electrical, automation, operational technology (OT), industrial networking and control system solutions across critical infrastructure, utilities, industrial and local government environments. Due to continued growth and the successful award of multiple industrial infrastructure and automation projects, we are seeking an experienced and motivated Industrial Network & Systems Engineer to join our Newcastle-based engineering team. This is a hands-on engineering role working across PLC, SCADA, telemetry and industrial automation systems throughout NSW. Your new role You will be involved in the design, deployment, configuration and support of secure operational technology and industrial network environments across water, wastewater, industrial and infrastructure facilities. The role is focused on network, server and infrastructure systems that support SCADA and telemetry environments. PLC programming and control system development are performed by AVE’s dedicated automation engineering team. What You'll Actually Do
- Design and deploy industrial and operational technology network infrastructure
- Configure and support FortiGate, FortiSwitch and FortiAP platforms
- Implement VLANs, routing, firewall policies, VPNs, SD-WAN and network segmentation
- Deploy and support OT server and virtualisation infrastructure including Hyper-V environments, backups and remote access systems
- Support fibre optic, wireless and WAN connectivity across distributed operational sites
- Configure and support fixed wireless point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks
- Perform onsite commissioning, troubleshooting and fault resolution
- Develop technical documentation, network diagrams and as-built records
- Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), integrated commissioning and staged deployments
- Assist with implementation of secure IT/OT network separation and cybersecurity hardening
- Work closely with automation, electrical and engineering teams This role is based in Newcastle, NSW, with travel required to customer and project sites across the Hunter Valley and regional NSW depending on project requirements. About you
- Enterprise networking across major platforms- Hands-on experience with enterprise switching, routing, and firewall technologies across Fortinet, Cisco, Aruba, or equivalent, including FortiGate, FortiSwitch, and FortiAP.
- Security and remote access expertise- Proven skills in firewall configuration, IPSec VPN, SD-WAN, and secure remote access, ideally backed by Fortinet FCA/FCP/NSE or Cisco CCNA/CCNP certifications.
- OT/IT convergence and industrial networking- experience working across both IT and operational technology environments, including OT network segmentation, industrial Ethernet, and exposure to industrial protocols like Modbus TCP/IP, MQTT, or OPC-UA.
- Windows Server and virtualisation infrastructure- solid experience with Hyper-V, Windows Server, and virtualised environments, with relevant Microsoft or VMware experience.
- Wireless and WAN connectivity- Demonstrated experience with wireless deployments (Ubiquiti, FortiAP), fixed wireless, fibre optic networking, and WAN connectivity.
- Field-ready with strong diagnostics and documentation- Comfortable working in live brownfield and industrial environments, strong fault-finding skills, able to work independently, and willing to travel across NSW.
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability in hands-on projects and project management capability.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
