Secondary System Engineer (City of Parramatta Council)

Job Description Summary The Secondary System Engineer will carry out engineering designs in the protection, control and auxiliary systems discipline for transmission & distribution and power generation projects and tenders in accordance with the project specifications, agreed timeframes and Company Management Systems. The Secondary System Engineer provides direction and assistance to a work group to meet assigned objectives. In this role, you will work within defined parameters to make decisions, apply concepts to issues of moderate complexity, and resolve issues through immediate action or short‑term planning. Responsibilities
- Design or be in charge of designing the protection and control system, electrical distribution, and auxiliary systems of a High voltage & Medium voltage AIS & GIS substations.
- Execute design, analysis, and/or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements.
- Carry out factory and/or site testing of protection systems to validate design, manufacturing, and installation utilizing a range of modern secondary injection and protocol test equipment.
- Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
- Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project.
- Carry out investigations into protection systems behaviour and provide timely communications on significant issues or developments.
- Participate on teams assigned to address organisational initiatives and generic issues.
- Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.
- Ensure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate EHS leadership and ensure Zero Deviation Plan is implemented within the team.
- Identify and evaluate EHS risks in own area and implement practical measures.
- Participate in hierarchical/team safety visits and lead EHS improvement initiatives.
- Set objectives and measure results to encourage EHS performance as a contributing factor to reach business objectives.
- Set the example by demonstrating proper acts, actively observing work conditions and behaviours, giving constructive feedback, and celebrating EHS effective prevention.
- Actively participate in defining corrective actions when work is unsafe or an uncontrolled risk is observed.
- Routinely observe routines and behaviours of others and provide immediate feedback regarding unsafe behaviour and celebrate achievements or secure behaviours. Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Science or Engineering, major in electrical engineering.
- Minimum 4–5 years of working experience in power system protection, such as design, consulting, testing, and commissioning.
- Experience in a leading role in managing engineering activities is a plus.
- Knowledge of Australian and IEC standards related to power systems and equipment.
- Ability to travel onsite when required, expected up to 30% away depending on business need (e.g., during testing, commissioning, and site visits). Desired Characteristics
