- Must be studying as an Undergraduate towards a Science degree with biomedically related subjects.
- Must have completed the first year of study and be able to continue with subsequent years of undergraduate study part‑time.
- Attention to detail with an aptitude for analytical work by microscopy and/or digital image analysis using relevant software applications. What You’ll Be Doing The Department provides a range of Cytogenetic/Cytogenomic testing services with over 10,000 referred tests per annum. This entry‑level traineeship will support a busy Cytogenetics pathology laboratory and provide valuable working experience. Initially, you will receive supervised training in specimen collection and handling, laboratory information management system (LIMS) data entry, general laboratory duties, record keeping, and equipment maintenance. The role will progress to performing cytogenetic tests and interpreting results, including G‑band karyotyping, fluorescent in‑situ hybridisation (FISH), quantitative fluorescent PCR (QF‑PCR), PCR analysis, and chromosome microarray testing on various samples (human cells or DNA from blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, chorionic villus, solid tumours, and formalin‑fixed tissues). The successful applicant will be enrolled part‑time in a BSc degree in genetics and biomedically relevant subjects while working as a non‑permanent trainee hospital scientist in clinical cytogenetics. Time off is given each week during term for university attendance. Trainee positions are reviewed after each semester and are subject to satisfactory academic progress and work performance. The traineeship continues until completion of the BSc degree.
