Senior Geotechnical Engineer Ready to pursue your professional journey with Northern Star? Join our high-performing Underground Technical Services team at KCGM Operations in Kalgoorlie‑Boulder, working a 4/3 roster of 12‑hour days. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring safe and efficient mining through expert geotechnical practice. Responsibilities
- Provide practical, risk‑based geotechnical advice and direction across planned and active underground mining areas, ensuring appropriate ground support systems enable safe and efficient mining.
- Work closely with the Technical Production team to inform medium‑term mine design and stope extraction planning, optimising business outcomes while maintaining geotechnical stability and compliance.
- Be accountable for the development, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the underground geotechnical model, ensuring it reflects current geological and geotechnical understanding and the current mining strategy.
- Collaborate closely with Underground Operations to reconcile geotechnical model assumptions against actual ground performance and observed conditions.
- Manage the preparation, implementation, and periodic review of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) and associated geotechnical standards in accordance with the site Safety Management System and Western Australian mining regulations.
- Work closely with the Corporate Technical team to develop, maintain, and apply underground numerical and analytical geotechnical models to support medium‑term planning and strategic decision‑making.
- Manage and coordinate external geotechnical consultants engaged on specialist studies and technical projects, ensuring scope, quality, and value are achieved.
- Ensure medium‑term geotechnical processes, controls, and design assumptions are embedded within mine planning workflows, operational procedures, and technical deliverables.
- Lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance to Geotechnical Engineers, supporting capability development and consistent application of geotechnical standards. Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years experience using geotechnical software (Rockscience, IMAT/Flac3D, IMS, MxRap); numerical modelling experience highly regarded; extensive underground hard‑rock mine experience.
- Awareness of the Work Health & Safety Act and regulations (desirable).
- Tertiary qualification in Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent.
- Current "C" Class Western Australian Driver’s Licence (Manual). St John’s Senior First Aid certificate (desirable).
- Strong leadership skills and experience leading a diverse team of recent‑to‑industry engineers.
- Hold self and others accountable to roles and responsibilities; good communication skills.
- Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
- Must meet pre‑employment criteria including medical, drug and alcohol screening, right to work, and Australian national police clearance. Benefits
