This is a hands-on contract role suited to someone who can quickly assess priorities, execute effectively, and deliver tangible improvements in a short timeframe. Core Responsibilities: Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
- Take ownership of key month-end close activities, including journals, accruals, prepayments, and review of financial results, with a focus on improving close speed and quality.
- Prepare and uplift balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring robust substantiation, timely clearance of reconciling items, and clear audit support.
- Support the delivery of accurate monthly financial reporting and variance analysis within tighter close timelines.
- Maintain the fixed asset register and process depreciation, disposals, and related accounting. Statutory Reporting, Audit & Compliance
- Support statutory financial statements and year-end reporting requirements, including schedules and disclosures.
- Coordinate audit deliverables, respond to audit queries, and ensure supporting documentation is complete, accurate, and readily accessible.
- Assist with tax compliance and reporting (e.g., BAS/GST, FBT, income tax packs) in collaboration with internal and external advisors. Technical Accounting, Controls & Governance
- Strengthen the balance sheet reconciliation framework by improving ownership, quality, consistency, and on-time completion.
- Support accounting policy application and technical accounting assessments (e.g., revenue recognition, leases, provisions) as required.
- Identify control gaps and implement practical remediation actions to strengthen compliance, approvals, documentation, and audit trails. Process Improvement & Systems
- Drive practical improvements in close and reporting processes to simplify workflows, remove bottlenecks, and enable a faster month-end close.
- Support finance systems enhancements (e.g., MYOB/Xero/ERP configuration, chart of accounts, reporting structure) and related testing and controls.
- Develop and maintain high-quality working papers, process documentation, and supporting schedules to improve consistency and audit readiness. Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with budget owners and operational stakeholders to ensure accurate coding, accruals, and timely financial information.
- Provide financial guidance and support to the broader finance team, contributing to a collaborative, high-performing environment. Required Experience
- 5 years’ experience in hands-on financial accounting roles, including ownership of month-end close, journals, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Strong understanding of accounting standards and financial reporting requirements; able to apply judgement to resolve accounting issues.
- Proven experience preparing audit-ready working papers, resolving audit queries, and improving supporting documentation under tight timeframes.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience working with finance systems/ERPs (MYOB/Xero or similar); comfortable working with large datasets.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to prioritise quickly, and a proven track record of executing effectively in quick-paced or contract environments. Why Join Us? This short-term contract offers the opportunity to make an immediate and visible impact by improving audit readiness, strengthening controls, and helping the finance team achieve a faster, more disciplined month-end close.
