Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented Structural Steel Estimator to prepare accurate, timely, and competitive estimates for structural steel packages. The ideal candidate will combine technical knowledge of steel design and fabrication with strong quantity takeoff, budgeting, and cross-functional collaboration to support bidding and project execution. Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough takeoffs from architectural, structural, and shop drawings to determine material quantities and associated labor.
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates for steel fabrications and erection, including: -Material quantities and unit rates

- Prepare and analyse tender proposals, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, and customer requirements.
- Apply prevailing wage, subcontractor quotes, and supplier data; solicit and evaluate bids from fabricators, erectors, and subcontractors.
- Build and maintain cost databases, shop drawing interpretations, and standard estimating templates.
- Perform risk assessment and contingency planning; identify potential cost drivers and propose mitigations.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, drafters, and procurement to validate assumptions and finalize estimates.
- Review and interpret drawings, specifications, standards, and relevant codes to ensure compliance.
- Develop and present scope and cost breakdowns.
- Prepare risk-adjusted budgets and alternate scenarios for value engineering and optimised design options.
- Support post-tender negotiations, change orders, and claims with accurate cost impact analyses.
- Maintain documentation, assumptions, and traceability for audit purposes. Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3–7+ years of structural steel estimating experience in a construction or fabrications environment.
- Proficiency in takeoff software and estimation tools; strong command of MS Excel (advanced formulas, data analysis, pricing models).
- Knowledge of fabrication and erection processes, shop drawings, connection design, and detailing.
- Ability to read and interpret steel shop drawings, erection sequences, and structural plans.
- Strong analytical, numeracy, and organisational skills; detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to present complex estimates clearly to internal teams and clients.
- Willingness to travel to client sites, fabricators, and project sites as needed. Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of steel procurement, long lead items, and supply chain constraints.
- Familiarity with lean estimating practices and value engineering techniques.
- Certification or training in estimating or project management. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

- Change order impact and profitability on projects
- Client responsiveness and bid presentation quality Physical and Work Environment:
- Office-based with frequent collaboration with field teams; occasional site visits or client meetings.
