About the Team
Technical Services at UTS support teaching, research, and operational excellence across disciplines. Dedicated technical teams manage laboratories, fieldwork logistics, and specialist facilities, while overseeing procurement, asset management, and compliance with safety protocols. Within the Faculty of Science, Technical Services provides dedicated support for teaching and research laboratories, fieldwork operations, and specialist facilities. Teams support safe and reliable scientific activity through local operational readiness, equipment support and adherence to University Work Health & Safety requirements.
About the Role
The Assistant Technical Services Officer in the Physics, Chemistry & Forensics Team provides hands-on technical assistance and operational support to enable the protected, efficient and reliable delivery of teaching and research activities within Faculty of Science laboratories and specialist spaces. Working under routine direction, the role supports laboratory readiness, basic equipment setup, consumables management and routine records and compliance tasks.
Detailed Description
Role Responsibilities
Prepare laboratories and teaching spaces for routine practical activities, including set-up, pack-down and turnaround, in line with established procedures.
Support routine teaching, research and facility activities within scope, including in-session assistance and response to routine operational issues.
Assist with preparation, staging, storage and distribution of routine materials, reagents and consumables.
Perform routine equipment checks and basic set-up/operation, escalating non-routine issues as required.
Support routine procurement, stock control, logistics and recordkeeping within established processes.
Follow local Work Health and Safety procedures and assist with inspections, risk assessments and corrective actions as directed.
Provide flexible support across discipline teams and other operational areas as required.
About You
Skills, attributes and knowledge
Good written and oral communication skills.
Ability to plan, prioritise and organise work within tight timeframes.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in busy laboratory environments.
Attention to detail and ability to comply with standard operating procedures.
Ability to identify issues and escalate appropriately.
Basic computer skills in commonly used programs (e.g. Microsoft Word and email).
Knowledge of laboratory procedures and WHS principles relevant to Physics, Chemistry & Forensics laboratories.
Experience
Experience working in a laboratory environment with routine laboratory processes.
Experience following safe work practices, including handling hazardous materials where applicable.
Experience supporting stock control, procurement or logistics activities (desirable).
Emergency preparedness, willingness to support local emergency preparedness and response activities, including completion of required training and undertaking emergency warden duties when appointed (as required).
Qualifications
Completion of a Diploma of Science, or equivalent relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience.

Remuneration/Salary
What We Offer
Base Salary Range: $77,194
- $82,568 (HEW4) plus 17% superannuation (pension)
The position is full time and will be made on a continuing basis.
