Sleep Medicine Clinical Fellow
- Advanced Trainee – Woolcock/St George About the role The Woolcock Institute of Medical Research is seeking a Clinical Fellow (Advanced Trainee) for a 0.5 FTE salaried position at Woolcock Institute and 0.5 FTE commitment at St George Hospital with opportunity to earn clinical income through hospital clinics. The training is 12 months commencing February 2027. This position will work across two key sections of the Institute.
- The Woolcock Clinic – a world leading, multidisciplinary clinic specialising in the treatment of all sleep and breathing disorders. The role will contribute to the provision of sleep medicine clinical services with active involvement in the clinics: Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Clinic, Insomnia Clinic, CPAP Clinic and General Sleep Clinic, as well as its diagnostic services including in-lab polysomnography, CPAP titration and review studies, multiple sleep latency testing and maintenance of wakefulness testing.
- Sleep and Circadian Research Group – a large, multidisciplinary research group working to forge new ground in the biology of sleep and the prevention and treatment of sleep disorders. The group has a broad and extensive research programme and the role will actively participate across multiple projects, including participant screenings for research studies, conducting participant visits and undertaking its own small research project in an area of interest. Additionally, the role will undertake clinical and research activities at St George Hospital which recently opened the largest public facility in the country. Specialised MDT clinics include Neurology, neuromuscular, maxillofacial-ENT-dental-sleep and disability medicine clinics requiring ventilation. This portion is non-salaried but offers prospect to earn clinical income via the hospital clinics. This position is suited to trainees wishing to complete Advanced Training in Sleep Medicine or those who have already attained their Respiratory Medicine FRACP and are seeking Sleep Medicine Training/accreditation. - Clinical knowledge and experience with common sleep disorders including sleep-disordered breathing, disorders of daytime somnolence, insomnia, parasomnias, chronobiology disorders, and psychiatric, cardiorespiratory and neurological disorders affecting sleep.
- Hands-on practical skills in management of above disorders including CPAP use, non-invasive ventilation, basic behavioural therapy for insomnias and chronobiology disorders, and stimulant use.
- Basic practical knowledge of instrumentation, recording, scoring techniques and interpretation for polysomnographic studies including overnight PSG, CPAP pressure determination studies, bilevel titration, multiple sleep latency and maintenance of wakefulness testing.
- Basic knowledge of clinical research processes and procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness to travel between locations (Woolcock Institute and St George Hospital).
- Current Working With Children Check. Qualifications
- Obtained or due to have obtained Respiratory Medicine FRACP or similar by February 2027.
- Eligibility to be enrolled in Sleep Medicine Advanced Training through the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Location The salaried part of the role will be based at Woolcock Institute’s current site in Macquarie Park. The other portion will be based at St George Hospital precinct.
