Description
This is a broad DSP and systems engineering role focused on turning RF sensor and antenna-derived data into robust operational capability. The role will work across the signal-processing chain, including digital beamforming, spectral analysis, RF detection, signal characterisation, satellite data matching and system-level integration. This role is suited to someone with strong DSP fundamentals, practical RF systems experience, and the ability to move between algorithm development, system integration and operational implementation. Key Responsibilities Digital Signal Processing and Algorithm Development
- Design, implement and validate DSP algorithms for RF signal detection, extraction, filtering and characterisation.
- Develop signal-processing methods for spectral analysis, beam outputs, signal duration, occupied bandwidth, centre frequency, polarisation and detected peak behaviour.
- Work with antenna-derived data products, including beam outputs, spectra, direction-of-arrival products and array covariance-derived features.
- Develop algorithms to improve signal detection, feature extraction, candidate ranking and ambiguity resolution.
- Analyse real-world RF data from operational and experimental sensor systems.
- Support development of repeatable, testable and documented DSP workflows. Digital Beamforming and RF Systems
- Support the development and validation of digital beamforming capability across multibeam antenna systems.
- Contribute to beamformer design, testing, calibration and performance analysis.
- Work on beam generation, beam pointing, beam quality assessment and beam-level signal inspection.
- Support future digital beamforming development, including algorithm design, test planning and system integration.
- Analyse antenna and system-level performance using measured RF data.
- Work with RF, FPGA, software and systems teams to translate DSP concepts into operational capability. RF Data Products and Satellite Matching
- Develop and refine algorithms that associate observed RF events with known satellite objects, pass predictions and expected RF characteristics.
- Build logic to support satellite candidate matching using observation time, pass geometry, frequency, bandwidth, polarisation, detected peak behaviour and confidence measures.
- Investigate edge cases where multiple satellite candidates may be plausible for the same RF event.
- Improve matching performance over repeated observations and across different sensor locations.
- Support development of RF characterisation, pattern-of-life and operational SDA outputs. Systems Engineering and Integration
- Work across the signal chain from antenna-derived data through to processed RF outputs and downstream data products.
- Support system-level test planning, verification, validation and performance assessment.
- Define algorithm requirements, interface requirements, test cases and acceptance criteria.
- Contribute to commissioning, calibration and optimisation of deployed RF systems.
- Document system behaviour, algorithm assumptions, processing limits and performance trade-offs.
- Support transition from prototype algorithms into operational processing pipelines. Software Engineering
- Develop production-quality software for DSP, RF analysis and system integration.
- Work primarily in Python and relevant scientific computing libraries.
- Contribute to automated or near-real-time processing pipelines.
- Use version control, structured testing and engineering documentation.
- Collaborate with RF, FPGA, software, systems engineering and product teams. Required Skills and Experience
- Degree in electrical engineering, telecommunications, signal processing, physics, applied mathematics, computer science or a related field.
- Robust understanding of digital signal processing, including FFTs, filtering, spectral analysis, detection theory and time-frequency analysis.
- Experience with RF systems, radar, SATCOM, spectrum monitoring, radio astronomy, EW, SIGINT or similar signal environments.
- Experience working with antenna, receiver or sensor-derived RF data.
- Strong Python skills, including NumPy, SciPy, Pandas or equivalent tools.
- Ability to analyse spectrograms, time-series data and frequency-domain signal products.
- Understanding of beamforming, direction-of-arrival estimation, antenna arrays or spatial signal processing.
- Ability to work with noisy, incomplete and real-world sensor data.
- Ability to build repeatable algorithms and validate performance against measured data.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with digital beamforming, multibeam antenna systems or electronically steered antenna systems.
- Experience with FPGA, RFSoC, GPU or high-throughput signal-processing architectures.
- Experience with X-band, S-band or other SATCOM frequency bands.
- Experience in satellite communications, space domain awareness, satellite tracking or RF sensing.
- Understanding of satellite pass geometry, orbital data, RF propagation or satellite communications concepts.
- Experience with statistical classification, probabilistic matching, Bayesian methods or confidence scoring.
- Experience with system commissioning, calibration, verification and validation.
- Familiarity with Docker, Git, CI/CD, Airflow, cloud processing or similar engineering tools.
