About the office This position is part of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) portfolio, encompassing Student Success, Chaplaincy, Libraries, Student Life, and Wellbeing. Student Success is a national office focused on supporting student achievement through learning support, career development, peer learning and scholarships. About the role The Learning Advisor supports student achievement by helping students build study skills, English language and academic literacies to improve success and retention. The position reports to the Learning Coordinator. Key Responsibilities
- Deliver individual and small-group consultations and workshops for students, both online and in person, focusing on the development of study skills, English language and academic literacies.
- Conduct research and scholarship activities and prepare reports on initiatives that support student success and retention.
- Develop curriculum-specific resources to support academic literacy and numeracy development.
- Collaborate with course coordinators and academic staff to promote best practice in supporting student success.
- Clearly communicate the purpose and scope of consultations to students, including that they do not provide content-based instruction or proofreading.
- Ensure any concerns or issues particularly those relating to student wellbeing and academic integrity are promptly reported to the Learning Coordinator and/or relevant university staff.
- Manage consultation bookings and maintain accurate records. Qualifications, skills & experience Level A Academic Level A Academic Staff Member is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution, particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level and to carry out activities to develop their scholarly and professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline.
- Completion of tertiary study (4 years) in a relevant discipline and/or have equivalent qualifications and/or professional experience.
- Honours degree or higher qualifications, an extended professional degree, or a three-year degree with a postgraduate diploma.
- Strong understanding of study skills, English language learning and academic literacies, and experience in supporting tertiary students to develop one or more of these capabilities.
- Teaching or instructional experience including a demonstrated ability to engage with students to achieve learning outcomes and the use and creation of appropriate resources.
- Strong communication skills including an ability to communicate effectively with a range of diverse groups and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to work well within both a one-to-one and multidisciplinary team context.
- Evidence of managing accurate record-keeping and reporting.
