- A culture encouraging inclusion and diversity The Role As a Specialist Inspector, after completing our Specialist Training Programme, you will use your specialist maritime engineering expertise to help regulate the UK’s offshore energy sector. Working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team, you will assess offshore safety cases and provide expert technical judgement on areas including hull structure and stability, watertight integrity, ballast and bilge systems, mooring and dynamic positioning systems, and cargo and offloading operations. You will also engage with industry bodies, stakeholders and technical committees to help shape benchmark standards for the design and operation of floating offshore installations. Responsibilities
- Carry out onshore and offshore inspections
- Investigate incidents, complaints and technical failures relating to maritime integrity
- Prepare technical reports and expert evidence for legal proceedings
- Provide specialist health and safety advice across HSE and the offshore industry
- Assess systems relating to hull stability, ballast, mooring and offshore operations
- Support enforcement activities where risks or non‑compliance are identified Qualifications and Experience
- Qualified marine engineer with an STCW Certificate of Competency as a Chief Engineer Unlimited, or a degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent qualifications with demonstrable experience as a marine engineer
- Experience in design, construction, integrity management and operation of floating offshore installations, support vessels, and their marine plant and equipment
- Expert‑level knowledge of marine systems operation
- Knowledge of design principles and safety levels for floating offshore installations
- Understanding of major accident hazards and control measures for floating offshore installations and mobile offshore units
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards from ISO, IMO, API and classification societies
- Basic principles of risk management and risk assessment tools
- Chartered Engineer status or qualifications to achieve chartered status with a corporate membership of an appropriate professional institution (IMarEST or RINA)
- Full, valid driving licence (unless reasonable adjustments can be made in line with the Equality Act 2010) You must be able to satisfy the OEUK approved offshore medical and OPITO approved survival training requirements (BOSIET/MIST). Travel and Working Patterns You will spend periods of time offshore, including overnight stays, usually working outside normal core hours, early check‑ins and late returns from offshore inspections. Travel will include approximately 8 offshore visits per year ranging from one to four days, sometimes requiring unplanned visits on short notice and including weekends. Regular travel to Aberdeen and other HSE offices for training and meetings will also be required, potentially involving overnight stays.
