- STEM and Trades Immersion / Visit Day at Port Wakefield
- Departs from / Returns to RAAF Edinburgh
The Port Wakefield Joint Proof and Experimental Establishment hosts weapons trials, munitions proofing and environmental testing for the Australian Army, Navy, Air Force and other Defence groups including Defence Science & Technology. The 56 square kilometre site is 83 kilometres north of Adelaide, near the northern tip of Gulf St Vincent. The Port Wakefield range incorporates the static and dynamic testing and evaluation of weapons, ammunition and equipment. It is the only range in Australia where projectiles can be fired into a coastal area and retrieved relatively undamaged for assessment. It provides for long range testing and performance measurement of medium to large calibre weapon systems, including guns, mortars, rockets, tank guns and naval guns and their ammunition. Additionally it allows for accelerated life cycle testing, radiography, inspection, function testing, or disposal of Explosive Ordnance on the one site. Port Wakefield provides a comprehensive and unique Explosive Ordnance and Weapon Testing not available elsewhere in the region. Along with weapons testing, the site is also used for destruction of expired and unsafe ordnance.
This immersion day will depart from and return to RAAF Base Edinburgh
This type of visit will be beneficial to students pursuing or considering a STEM or Trades career and the following activities are likely to be included:
- Range Safety Induction, including Unit History and the role this unit plays within Defence
- Walk through the Ammunition Processing Building, Weapons Storage Facility, Workshop and Range Control
- Range Tour showing the various testing locations and explanation of the types of testing carried out at each location
- See the Environmental Testing Facility, which includes capabilities such as Radiography and Climatic and Vibration testing of Explosive Ordnance
- Depending on the day, students may be able to witness a live firing exercise, if it is being conducted on the day of the visit.
